MUSICOLOGY (Ph. D)

Long passionate about research into and the integration of the various dimensions of music, René Orea earned a Ph.D. in musicology from the Université de Montréal in 2016, under the supervision of Nathalie Fernando. His dissertation is titled Le rythme dans les musiques traditionnelles d’Amérique du Sud : typologie, modélisation et signification culturelle (Rhythm in South American Traditional Music: Typology, Modeling, and Cultural Significance).

He also published an article, "Paradoxe dans la relation entre oralité et écriture musicale" (Paradox in the Relationship Between Orality and Musical Notation), in the journal *Circuit, Musiques contemporaines* (Vol. 21, No. 2, 2011, "Musiciens sans frontières" / "Musicians Without Borders," edited by J. Goldman and N. Fernando). In 2010–2011, René served as president of the Université de Montréal’s Musicology Circle.​
